How to find your
Ancestors that were
emigrants? Some have emigrated as far as New Zealand and Australia.
Others have migrated to Canada and the USA. There are a lot of
genealogy websites out there and finding your information is
challenging.
Start with www.nationalarchives.gov.uk they have great resources and links to many of the sources I will discuss below.
If you know the country your ancestor had emigrated to, start with their National Library and archives. They will contain family history databases, electoral rolls and census records. Look at Heritage centers.
Next, research the various Birth, Death & Marriages BMD records. Examine certificates that contain important information about your Ancestors. Each country and state lists their own fees. There is an abundance of information to be found from cemetery records and funeral notices.
Local libraries are a great source to check out census records. Census records often contain valuable information about your ancestors. Your local library often stores information regarding Emigrants. Examine Passenger lists indexes. They contain the ship’s name, the port of departure and the dates of sailing and arrival. Note: the passenger list usually only gives names, but you can identify family groups.
Finally, check Books & CDs. Each country has Genealogical Societies that sell CD’s and Books with indexes and names of emigrants. They may be worth the investment.
